You're off on
your first extended trip to a developing country...or maybe you're just flying
to Bangkok for a short visit. You've seen a travel doctor and had all the
recommended shots, but, as we all know something can go wrong
Travellers should always carry a first aid kit. For extended trips, you can
purchase large pre-assembled medical kits from most pharmacies or outdoor
stores. But you can also make your own smaller (and more useful) kit from
personal medications and the lists below.
First Aid Kit Checklist
These are the items we usually take with us. Take this first aid kit list as a
recommendation only. It should NEVER replace your doctor's advice and your own
judgment. What you need depends on your destination, and how remote your trip
will be.
band-aids - various sizes - for small wounds, cuts and scratches
sterile gauze dressings - various sizes - to cover larger wounds
light elastic bandage - 8 cm x 4 m - to fix sterile gauze dressings
elastic bandage/bandage crepe heavy duty- 8 cm x 5 m - to immobilise a limb
roll of adhesive tape - you can fix many things with it
bandage triangular - for slings
wound cleansing tissue - individual packed moist tissues to clean wounds
alcohol pads - useful to clean instruments
scissors
tweezers
safety pins
antiseptic cream
cream or gel for burns
antihistamine cream and pills - for insect bites and mild allergic reactions.
insect repellent
sun block cream
pain killers - Aspirin, Paracetamol - for minor pain and fever
antacid tablets - if your prone to getting heartburn
multi-use tool - Swiss Army knife or Leatherman
a record of your health problems and your personal medications
a First Aid book
Once again we find that the Brisbane winters are fastt approaching and it is time for us to head to warmer climates. Our next location has been chosen and we will be spending the winter in the Andaman region of Thailand. This winter we spread ourselves between Phuket, Khao Lak and the Krabi region.
